2014 Contributing Authors and Editors

Mark Davies  is a professor of Linguistics at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, USA.  His primary areas of research are corpus linguistics, the design and optimization of linguistic databases, language change and genre-based variation, and frequency and collocational analyses (all for English, Spanish, and Portuguese).

Rachelle Emanuel, born in London, immigrated to Israel after graduating high school in 1975. She holds a B.Ed. and M.A. from the Michlalah College, Jerusalem, and has been teaching English as a foreign language to high school students for the past 35 years. Her editing experience began with the work described in the article published here, “Editing: My Balancing Act.” For the past ten years she has been editing and translating works mainly in the field of Holocaust research. To improve her skills, Rachelle recently completed the program in English Editing and Editorial Scholarship at the David Yellin Academic College in Jerusalem.

Shiri Forer was born and lives in Israel. She has a BA in English Literature from Haifa University and a certificate in Hebrew Editing from Tel Aviv University. She works as an editor in online and print publications.

Yosef Gotlieb, PhD is the founding director of the Text and Publishing Studies Program at David Yellin College of Education, Jerusalem, Israel. He is a founding editor of The 21st Century Text. An educator, author an editor, his most recent book is Rise, A Novel of Contemporary Israel. His website is found at www.ysgotlieb.net.

Susan Holzman, is an applied linguist whose work focuses on EAP reading, academic writing, language assessment and the use of dictionaries and corpora in language learning. She is currently teaching at David Yellin Academic College in Jerusalem and Bar Ilan University in Ramat Gan. She is past president of the English Teachers’ Association of Israel and presently serving as regional representative for Israel on the Asia TEFL Executive Council.

Batya Shai, MA (New York University Graduate School of Arts & Sciences) is an English teacher, certified editor (David Yellin College, Editorial Scholarship Program), and freelance writer whose work has appeared in various publications in the US and Israel. In addition to these “hats,” she sports that of a wife, mother, and grandmother.

Elana Singer immigrated to Israel from South Africa in 1986. She holds a BA (Hons.) in English Literature from the University of Cape Town, Teaching Diploma from the University of South Africa, and MA in English Literature from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She has taught English in high schools in Israel for over twenty years, and is currently teaching in a girls’ high school in Bet Shemesh, where she lives with her husband and six children.

Neal Whitman of Pacific Grove, California, has published over 600 poems since his 2005 retirement as a medical school professor. He has won several poetry awards; thus far for 2013, he won the K. Blaze Memorial (State of Illinois); 2nd prize in the Thief River Falls contest (State of Minnesota); and 1st prize Winter Senryu in Diogen Pro Kultura Magazin (Serbia / Bosnia-Herzegovina). He and his wife, Elaine, create “haiga” for several publications — a combination of her photography and his haiku.

Student Editors

Shalom Dinerstein was born and raised in New York City. He lived in Spain and France before immigrating to Israel in 1979. After studying for three years at Yeshivat D’var Yerushalayim in Jerusalem, Shalom worked at the Hebrew University as coordinator of religious activities and co-director of the Beit Midrash Torah learning program. Subsequently, he was employed at Teldan Information Systems, Ramat Gan, as chief editor of the Global Defense Information Database, with responsibility for abstracts dealing with defense and aerospace. Shalom has a BA in social sciences from Johns Hopkins University and an MA in Spanish from Middlebury College (program in Madrid). He and his wife live in Jerusalem and are blessed with five children and four grandchildren.

Shiri Forer was born and lives in Israel. She has a BA in English Literature from Haifa University and a certificate in Hebrew Editing from Tel Aviv University. She works as an editor in online and print publications.

Margie Peleg was born in the U.S where she received her BA in linguistics from the Pennsylvania State University. In 1982 she immigrated to Israel. She continued her education at Oranim College, where she earned her teacher’s certification in English as a Second Language and subsequently taught English at the elementary level for 25 years, focusing on children with learning difficulties. In 1998 she received her M.Ed. from the College of New Jersey in ESL and since then she has also been teaching English for Academic Purposes at the college level. Margie is married, has a daughter and two sons and lives on Kibbutz Ein-Harod.

Deena Tsameret grew up in Los Angeles and immigrated to Israel at the age of 16. She got her BA (Social Work) and MA (English Linguistics) and Translation Certificate from Bar Ilan University. She currently teaches English as a foreign language at the Open University.

Ellyn Yishai grew up in New Jersey and immigrated to Israel in 1992. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Brandeis University in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies and a Master of Education from the Hebrew University. She is also certified in teaching English as a Second Language and Translation. Ellyn taught General and Hebrew Studies in the United States. Since immigrating to Israel she has taught English in the Israeli public school system, first at the elementary level and presently at the junior and senior high school levels.
